Stop the Dog and Cat Consumption in South Korea!

South Korea is the World’s 14th largest economy yet an estimated 2.5 million dogs and thousands of cats are slaughtered and eaten as “health food” each year.
This Black Market Industry has never been legislated, regulated or even acknowledged by the World’s farming Industries or Food Standards Organizations. So why do Governments allow this practice to continue and set up expensive trade agreements to include animal welfare provisions, only to turn a blind eye?
Forced to endure deprivation and unimaginable torment from the moment they are born till the day they are slaughtered; dogs are imprisoned in cramped rusty raised cages all their lives with no protection from extreme weather and no water, exercise or medical care. Their eardrums are often burst to prevent them from barking.
In broad daylight, often in front of other live dogs, they are electrocuted, hanged, beaten or burnt to death.  This is a profit-driven, tax free, unregulated industry that aggressively promotes the myth that eating a dog (especially the dog’s penis) enhances man’s virility and gives him energy. In addition, consumption peaks during the hottest days of summer!
Koreans “genuinely” believe that the more dogs suffer, the more the consumer will enjoy the health benefits and enjoy the meat. Many dogs are sadistically made to experience extreme fear and suffering prior to death. Cats are frequently boiled alive to make tonics believed to treat rheumatism. The demand is so high in South Korea 30% of the dog meat is now imported from China.
Dog meat consumption is an evil custom that doesn’t belong in a modern society as well as a vice harmful to the mental health of our citizens. In my opinion, the fact that our society has been wasting national resources on utterly divisive internal conflicts in all walks of life, such as politics, economy and religion from ancient times is a natural result of evil practice of betrayal and a loss of trust in humanity through the slaughtering and eating of dogs which is then applied in human interactions consciously and unconsciously. Additionally, the slaughter of dogs causes severe pollution. In the process of mass breeding of dogs, a lot of noise pollution occurs and its negative effects on the public are serious. To solve that dog farmers commit the cruelty of forcibly bursting dogs’ eardrums to reduce the noise of barking. There isn’t anything they won’t do in order to eat dog meat. Moreover, to flavor the meat, sometimes the dogs are hung by the neck then mercilessly bludgeoned all over with a club, bursting their internal organs and killing it brutally and heartlessly. We must indeed call this a scumbag behavior. – Beopjeong Buddhist Priest, a South Korean National, http://koreandogs.org/?p=5557

MYTH The Biggest of all! – Only a certain type of dog is eaten.
FACT
In reality all dogs can fall foul to the dog meat industry. Farmed yellow dogs, abandoned former pets, purebreds, unwanted puppies and breeding dogs from mills, shelter dogs, sick dogs, and even Jindos (a Korean classified national monument No. 53).
MYTH Dogs bred for consumption feel no pain.
FACT
Eminent Scientist Stephen hawking confirmed in just 2012 animals especially those of the companion variety are sentient beings. Puppies and cats plunged into a boiling vat of water definitely feel pain!
MYTH Eating dog is a part of Korean Culture.
FACT
Evidence and recent testimonial by South Koreans show the historical reason to “avoid starvation” no longer stands. The reason it is continually described as “Korean Culture” nowadays is to defend it against Westerns criticism. All animal abuse must be stamped out. Values need to be changed. “In Korea, there is a word, “Me-Pung-Yang-Sok” which means “Beautiful custom and good morals” and refers when one culture deserves respect. I have never heard any Koreans call Dog meat as “Me-Pung-Yang-Sok”. Dog meat consumption is NOT a real Korean traditional food but the base of animal cruelty in Korea.” -Sue Cho
MYTH Legalizing dog meat will lessen the suffering of dogs.
FACT
Legalization will do nothing to stop the cruelty. With Legalization, eating dogs could even spread and become more entrenched in Korean society because it will be perceived as condoned by the government. If a nation is capable in 2011 of burying more than 9 million “legally farmed animals” alive during the foot and mouth crisis, dogs and cats do not stand a chance. The EU has never formally acknowledged DOG meat exists!
MYTH Dog meat makes you healthy.
FACT
A great way to get rid of food waste NOT fit for human consumption and highly illegal in Europe. 1/3 of the nation’s food waste is consumed by the dogs! Imagine eating animals fed on rotting food waste containing infectious diseases/food poisoning causing germs. This is not “health food”. BANNED EVERYWHERE ELSE IN THE WORLD – HOW CAN WORLD HEALTH ORGANISATIONS BE WRONG? Pumped full of antibiotics and antidiarrheal medicines, it is a known fact that eating contaminated meat can be hazardous and even fatal to people consuming it. In an article on 7/4/11, Dr Tae-Yo Ha, a leading writer of Oriental Medicine, confirmed: “Consuming meat concentrated with high level of antibiotics will cause severe toxic effect in human body, and will cause endocrine disruption in the long term and eventually lead to cancer and diabetes.”
MYTH Only a small segment of the population eats dog meat.
FACT
More widespread than imagined. People of all ages, gender, religion, class and education level eats dog meat. Even Catholic Bishops! In a Korean Newspaper in 2011 Sung-Hyo Lee, Catholic Bishop of Suwon Parish, S. Korea actually boasted, complete with smiling image: “My favorite food is dog meat. My hobby is forcing dog meat on foreign catholic priests. Especially the French ones.”
Housewives regularly shop at the market. Again in a national press, Korea JoonAng Daily, 12/3/12 a smiling 66 year old grandmother was reported saying: After looking at countless cages (of dogs) outside nearly 30 seemingly identical shops, she finds her choice. “This one looks healthy,” she tells a market attendant. “I’ll take him.”… “My family loves dog meat and insists on having it for special occasions.”

DOG’S LIFE
Dogs live in tiny raised up cages all their lives. They don’t know what it feels like to walk on ground. Separated from their mothers at an early age some are slaughtered as pups.  They can not mingle with other dogs other than those in cages beside them.  They suffer summer heat and freezing winters outdoors. They are not given water. They have to eat human food waste such as kimchi.  They get no exercise.  They have been known to have their eardrums burst to prevent them from barking.  Every natural instinct they have is thwarted by the inhumane and tortuous conditions they must live under.
DOG’S DEATH
Dogs are electrocuted, hanged, beaten or burned to death. There is a perverted belief that the meat tastes better if dogs have high adrenaline levels in their meat before they die. Therefore, some dogs are made to experience extreme fear and suffering in the lead up to their deaths. Some dogs are hanged and then beaten while they are hanging and still alive. Others are hanged and then a blow torch is used on them while they are still alive to remove their hair. Others still are simply beaten and tortured to death. Generally, at the markets, dogs are electrocuted and then their necks are broken.
DOG’S PRODUCTS
Dogs are turned into dog meat, dog meat soup, dog liquor, and dog “health” elixirs. Dubious health claims are made about dog products, included the typical claim that it assists male stamina and sexual prowess. Such pathetic claims are made throughout Asia with regard to all manner of animal products to attract equally pathetic male customers. In Korea, over the hottest days of the year, people follow a custom of eating dog meat because it allegedly increases energy. Exercising for health and energy is apparently too much hard work for dog meat eaters.
